Book Genre: magical_realism
Expect Emotions: paranormal distrust, friendship, newspaper history, trains,
Expect Elements: OUIJA board on laptop screen, friends seated around a table in a Bohemian room, newspapers
Expect Layout: OUIJA COMPUTER was inspired by the original book Jap Heron, written by Emily Grant Hutchings, published in 1917, now public domain. I have reimagined and rewritten the paranormal novel. My version is approximately 47,000 words. It’s a story written from beyond the grave by a handful of dead, prominent New York residents trying desperately to contact anyone who will first acknowledge their spirit beyond the grave, and second, take their advice. But in this modern-day twist; the OUIJA board is now the keyboard of a laptop computer and the planchette is a computer mouse. The spirits contact a group in the physical world through the help of a Mrs. Lisa Tenore, a physic-medium and book-store owner. It seems that the spirits wanted to have a chance to contact their grandson, and a tycoon who wanted an input into the current redevelopment of Staten Island’s failed North shore waterfront project, and an author who just wants to tell stories. The renaissance project begins, but is stuck in throws of bureaucracy, permitting problems, lawsuits, greed, lack of union cooperation, and plenty of misunderstandings of expectations and not the city’s problem. The spirits come together to help the living people solve their modern-day problems.
Expect Color: red

Design Concept

Original Book Cover For
Visual Composition:

The cover features a close-up image of a laptop screen displaying a OUIJA board with the letters glowing in red. Surrounding the laptop are four friends, seated around a table in a Bohemian room, their hands placed on the planchette (computer mouse). In the background, there are stacks of old newspapers and a vintage train passing by, symbolizing the newspaper history and the connection between the physical and spiritual worlds.

Design Typography:

The book title "The OUIJA Computer" is displayed in bold, red letters at the top of the cover. The author name "LORRI MEYER" is placed at the bottom in a more elegant font style.

Design Layout:

The laptop screen with the OUIJA board is the central focal point, while the friends and the background elements are positioned around it, creating a balanced composition.

Rationale Behind the Design:

The visual composition of the cover aims to capture the essence of the book's genre, combining elements of paranormal themes, friendship, newspaper history, and the modern technology twist of the OUIJA board on a laptop screen. The close-up image of the laptop screen with the glowing OUIJA board draws attention and creates intrigue. The arrangement of the friends and background elements adds depth and context to the story. The bold, red typography stands out against the darker background, while the elegant font choice for the author name adds a touch of sophistication. The matte paper stock enhances the vintage feel of the design, inviting readers into a world of magical realism.
